For those interested in reading one of the earliest novels, this one by Cao Xuequin is now available via Blackmask. It looks like other than the Pinyin transliteration of the Author's name, the translation employs largely Wade-Giles, or perhaps even earlier systems--nevertheless, it can be quite enjoyable.
