An Urgent Request for Prayers
My company has recently been acquired by another company in the same field. We know that there will be layoffs, and the strong suspicion and rumor is that they will be occurring perhaps as early as the end of this week, but certainly (the first wave) within two weeks. They are expected to affect between 13% (the company estimate) and 25% (the rumor going around) of the staff. While I have little reason to be concerned for myself, I'm very concerned for those around me. (And of course, I may just be an ostrich--in complete denial). Please pray for all of us as we go through this time--that the layoffs are less drastic than expected and that those who are let go are able to swiftly find gainful employment.

Prayer Requests
Mr. Core, late of blogging fame, requests our prayers and thoughts as he moves through what must be a difficult, frightening, and trying time in his career.
I request prayers for me and for all those with whom I work as we also move through some tumultuous times as we move toward a transformation of our company.
Thank you.

Deepest thanks and appreciation to all who said prayers for me on Tuesday. The presentation went far better than I had expected in my wildest dreams. The results have been galvanizing and envigorating. It feels like a new world opening up--so once again, thank you.

A Request for Prayers
A gift for Lent--I offer you good causes to pray for, thus practicing one of the three staples and foundations of Lenten discipline.
The people where I work are "living in interesting times." We are up for sale for the second time in five years and that has everyone a little edgy. Please pray for a successful sale that will allow us to resume our usual business.
In addition to the broader concerns of the company, I am living in especially interesting times with regard to work and would appreciate prayers. As far as I can discern all possible news would be good, but I'm waiting on tenterhooks to find out what will happen and there are enormous temptations to pride and other sins.
Finally, a young man who works with me recently announced that his wife gave birth to a child 10 weeks premature. Please pray for Coral that she quickly "comes up to speed." Everything seems okay so far, but you know how delicate the situation of a premature infant can be. Let's pray for continued stability and rapid improvement.
Thank you!

An Hour of Prayer
A notice from a friend on the West Coast, in time for all of us. Seems like a very good idea:
Unite in prayer for 1 hour Monday for the elections on Tuesday
There is a grass roots effort to have this country, united in prayer for one hour this Monday, asking for God's mercy and direction concerning Tuesday's critical elections.
Prayer is to start on the west coast from 9-10 a.m.
...from 10-11 a.m. mountain time,
.... 11-12 a.m. central time,
...and 12-1 p.m. eastern time.....
It can be done anywhere... rosary, divine mercy or novena, etc. One can be alone or gathered with friends. The object is to join all our prayers from one end of our country to the other, as one voice, begging God to have Mercy on us and Intercede for the good of our nation. We need all the help we can get to spread this message. Your help would be much appreciated.

Request for Prayers
Last night I was involved in a traffic accident a little more serious than a fender-bender. Let's call it a fender crusher. But as the little push I was given could have resulted in me being pushed into a moving stream where much more serious damage could have occurred, I am somewhat shaken, hence the tone of the earlier posts this morning. Hope they were somewhat coherent. Just keep me in mind today please for serentiy and coherence. Thanks.

Samuel will be performing in a "judging" competition on Sunday. He'll be playing a couple of pieces on piano.
I have to say, knowing absolutely nothing at all of the way children develop in the performance of music, Samuel seems to be roaring ahead. He seems to do splendidly. He certainly surprises me at every turn.

Praise God
I have a challenging, arduous, and difficult day ahead as does another person with whom I work. This is a day of opportunity and grace. Please pray that we both can rise to the occasion and become better people through this interaction. This is the possiblity of growth for all involved, and that is always a frightening and difficult time, so prayers would be appreciated. I dread it and embrace it because this is what God has for me today, and all that God provides is provided in perfect love.

A Request for Prayers
I don't know if I made a point about this before, but even if so, it never hurts to renew a request for prayer.
I have recently volunteered, and ultimately been accepted, to take on pro tem the duties of both the Regional Coordinator AND the Regional Formation Director. As to the latter, I feel that the requirements of the duties fall well within my skill set. As to the former, administration is not something that comes to me naturally. I will need a lot of help, both corporal and in the realm of prayer. I'd greatly appreciate it if you would remember me and more particularly my duties and responsibiities in this capacity in your prayer. I am not a particularly capable leader where the every-day issues and messy adherence to regulations is called for. Nevertheless, I know without doubt that with God's help I can do enough to keep our region moving forward.
So, please just remember my region and pray that I might be able to act for the good of the entire Carmelite community until such time as God raises up for us a capable leader.

A Little (Unexpected) Silence Again
I just finished typing up the first of these posts and due to what I will explain below, I hit the wrong button and hence demolished it.
I have been suffering from a slight health problem over the past few days, the treatment of which has entailed using some pain killers that have made it somewhat difficult to spend time at the keyboard. Moreover, you will probably find a greater number of typographical errors through this period as my proofing ability diminishes with my clarity. Please forgive me. And please pray for me that the present treatment will knock this wretched thing out. I do not like to contemplate the meaning of it otherwise.
While you're praying, please add prayers for all of these in the path of our present Hurricane Wilma. I know I'm very, very tired of this season, and seeing that Orlando is squarely within the cone of uncertainty on this one, I'm somewhat concerned. NOAA's present forecast is that Wilma will be a short, sharp punch across the penisula. Please pray that it is so and that we will be done with this nonsense for the season. Tying records isn't exactly my idea of fun when it comes to weather phenomena. (Though, I must say, there is a certain thrill at the possibility of breaking such a record. And a false sense of reassurance because averages and probabilities suggest to the untrained mind that next year would HAVE to be better. Oh, unfortunately not so. But we cling to the perception of the law of averages rather than to the cold reality that we must have some high years to balance the low and average 12 storms rather than 21. Still, we're better off than Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune(?) all of which have storms that have lasted for the better part of 400 years--if we use the Great Red Spot and Galileo's observations of it as an indicator.)

Request for Particular Prayers
I am at a juncture where I am facing crises of sorts in several dimensions of my life--nothing dire, but huge decisions that need more brain-power and heart than I seem to be able to muster. (Probably because they affect so many different aspects of life.) If you would remember particularly in your prayers a need for discernment in at least three modes--vocational, career, and home life, I would greatly appreciate it.

Another Message from the New Orleans Carmel
I hope that I am not breaching any confidence in sharing these communications, but there may be some of my Carmelite brothers and sisters who are not receiving these messages, and I think it is important to stress the urgent need for prayer for this Carmel, but for all of the people affected. I know you all know it, but this makes it family for me and I feel the need to share the burden. This is very, very hard.
From Sr. Andree of the New Orleans O. Carm Community
I am a distance from the devastation in New Orleans and am fine, Kevin. Yes, our motherhouse is underwater at lowest two levels. Angele and Gwen stayed there during the storm and were rescued by boat yesterday and shuttled to various transportation spots until they got to Baton Rouge where we picked them up yesterday. No one had heard from them all during the days so we weren't sure where they were. They were exhausted and in post traumatic shock with stories eventually to tell! Several sisters have not yet been contacted, but phones are great difficulty. Two of them are probably at the hospitals where they were working. They are probably safe. One sister we are not sure of. No one knew her plan. She could be fine somewhere, but communication is impossible. That is our hope.
My immediate family---siblings and their children's families are accounted for in terms of their plans for early evacuation, but still not able to get contact with all. They all lost all---their homes were near the motherhouse, near the lakefront where the levees broke and inundated the area. Total losses of all but their lives! It will be difficult months ahead.
All of our elderly sisters in nursing homes or in motherhouse were moved early and though they spent days in a school gym, we have now found a nursing home that could take them in Texas.
Loss of schools and ministries will have powerful impact on our future and its adjustments as a Congregation.
Pray for our perseverance and courage. Thanks for your concern.

A Message Regarding the New Orleans Carmelites
From the governing body in this province for T.O. Carm, please pray.
The first item is regarding the Carmelite Sisters in the New Orleans area of Louisiana. Sr. Libby and Sr. Mary (OCarms in the Lay Carmelite Office here in Darien) have asked me to share with you part of a message they are sending to friends and family.
"We haven't really been able to get first hand communication about the sisters in Louisiana. It looks as though mostly all of them left the area ahead of time, or, if they stayed behind, that they are safe. We do know of one sister who can't be located. No one knows anything of where she might be.
Television talks about the breach in the 17th Street Canal (just a few short blocks from our Motherhouse) but we are not able to tell by the TV images whether or not our Motherhouse and school have been destroyed. Perhaps when the water is contained and they continue showing videos of the area, we will have a better idea of our situation. Even our sisters who are in Louisiana (those who left the New Orleans area, I mean) don't really know a lot of what we see on TV regarding the flooding and devastation. "
Please keep in prayer all those, esp the poor (of which are are many in Louisiana!). It has been "our "tsunami" as one person put it. Massive and deep flooding is the primary disaster The area is below sea level, so widespread flooding damage from the broken levees are the worst nightmare in the New Orleans area after the storm had long gone!

Good News!!
Got through to Christine, only for about a minute and half--enough to ascertain that all of her family is okay. Their houses are underwater/destroyed and Christine presently has 11 guests in her house, but praise God their all alive!
As soon as I know more I'll let you all know. But praise God, everyone in this small group is okay.
Please continue prayers both for Christine and for all the others who are suffering hardship from loss of livelihood, goods, or loved ones. What a terrible, terrible storm.
I know I was terribly frightened on my trip home from Columbus in the aftermath of Charley as I was seeing all the devastation. But that doesn't hold a candle to this.

Plea for Prayers
You all know my good friends Christine and Gordon. They live in Louisiana, but outside of the worst of the storm. However, most of Christine's family lives in New Orleans/Metarie, including her mom and dad. Please pray that they are all right. I haven't been able to get in touch with Christine yet and naturally I am quite concerned because of the extent of the damage done and the frailness of her parents. I only hope they had the good sense to leave the city. Also brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins--the entire family was in the path of destruction. I'll keep you all posted as I find out more.

Katrina
Please pour out your prayers on the people of New Orleans, Louisiana, and adjacent states. This storm sounds like one to rival that of Galveston in the 1930s. It is much larger than the slightly weaker Andrew that devastated South Florida some years ago, and it's heading for a city that sits normally about 5 feet below sea level.
Pray for those leaving and traveling away. Pray for those left behind or staying behind. Pray for a weakening of the storm rapidly. At this strength it will affect people well-inland who have never experienced anything quite like this.

Special Prayer Request
Marriage is really under attack, both in the abstract formulation of law and in the concrete. We all know of some very prominent Catholics whose marriage is unfortunately falling apart quite publicly; however, there are any number of private crises as well.
As faithful Catholic we need to take a stand in prayer and fasting for marriage. Please consider offering even a single meal, or that tempting snack or desert, some small personal sacrifice in the name of the many who are enduring very, very difficult times right now. The assault seems enormous. Every time I turn around, I seem to learn of another couple whose marriage is in danger. Please give some time todqy, perhaps a decade of the rosary, perhaps during the Divine Mercy chaplet, or perhaps some other small prayer for the many, many people who are enduring this onslaught of the evil one. He will not cease until he has utterly corrupted or destroyed this life-giving sacrament.

Praise and Prayer Requests
Please include Linda's concerns in a special way in your prayers today. She is undergoing a most arduous trial at the present time and needs the support of all of us.
For the repose of the soul of M. aged twenty who died in a collision and most especially for the family and friends he left behind.
For the repose of the soul of MIke, recently baptized, aged 25, found dead on his couch by his parent Saturday. May he be with the Lord already.
For Msgr. Harte, Pastor of the Shrine of Mary Queen of the Universe, recovered and still recovering from surgery.
For Terry Schiavo (sp?) who was once again placed in harm's way by a "compassionate" court that washed their hands of blood in the same way as Pilate did--"we only interpret the law."
For Smockmomma's sister Charlene, may God help her, heal her, and above all else hold her close in time of yet another trial.
For a troubled marriage, that it may open to the Lord's healing touch and blossom with all the potential that is within it.
Please continue to pray for Dylan until he returns to us.
A quick sale and an easy move for Tom and his family as they set out on another exciting adventure in life.
For the people of the Sudan oppressed on all sides that they receive justice, mercy, and reprieve.
For those struggling against self to attain holiness, that the Good Lord will raise up new Saints for our times, visible beacons that draw all people toward Christ.

Prayer Requests--Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
Praise and Prayer Requests
Thanksgiving
For the many blessings and beautiful gifts that the Lord gives us day by day. He showers us with the promise of new life and grants us the beauties of this season. (Yes even in Florida, despite the temperatures, autumn has its majestice glory in beauty. Leaves fall from northern trees, and northern birds alight from Florida skies--our sign of autumn.) May He bless us especially in this season so that we may judge aright and wisely select the best possible leaders.
URGENT REQUESTS:
For the repose of the soul of Sister Anne, precious and beloved advisor to Katherine.
For Katherine, who having lost so substantial an anchor is feeling somewhat at 6s and 7s and for success in her ventures. May the prayers of Sister Anne, who, if not already at the side of Jesus will ascend rapidly on the fragrant offering of prayers from Carmelites the world over, assure her success and sure guidance.

For the people of the Sudan that they may know peace and security and that they might learn to live together.
A special request from two gentleman battling particularly troublesome and besetting sins for grace and help as they continue forward.
For all those in the process of discerning vocations to the religious life, for guidance, prudence and good counsel
For our children, that they grow up in security, comfort, and the certain knowledge that they are loved and that they be released from any bonds of darkness, fear, anger, or sadness that bind and threaten them
For all those living under the curse of generational sins, that they may have protection and the inheritance of the past may be made void in their lives.
For all who are suffering from marital problems, most particularly those in our own families or communities, that the Lord may intervene and remind them that a marriage is of three persons.
For mothers and families that struggle with autism and autistic-related disabilities: particularly for M'Lynn, Melissa, Christine, and Betty.
For families that desire more children
For the conversion or return of spouses and loved ones to the Catholic Church, most particularly for Amanda's husband
For the men and women of the American Armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan and for their families, may the Good Lord provide sustenance, support, compassion, and love that these separated families might continue to grow in strength and love.

(1) For Katherine and Franklin, Gordon and Christine, Peter Kucera, and for all who are seeking employment and suffering through difficult times as they wait.

It's Mostly Passed
Jeanne has mostly passed. Now we just have a steady 40-50 mph wind with gusts to 65. Something of a relief after 5:00 this morning. I'm told that overall it was somewhat worse the Frances but not as bad as Charley for those in Central Florida. However, now there is a considerable population in real danger from possible flooding. Please continue prayers.

Prayer Requests--24 September 2004
Please remember the more than 700 dead in Haiti as a result of Tropical Storm Jeanne. I retain this opening prayer as the known death toll increases daily, today it is more than 2,000.
Merciful Father,
hear our prayers and console us.
As we renew our faith in your Son,
whom you raised from the dead,
strengthen our hope that all our departed brothers and sisters
will share in his resurrection,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen Prayer from All Soul's
