Dear Mr. Riddle,

Oddly enough, Belloc is near his best when writing a combination of history and civil engineering. He has an accurate eye for the meaning of topography, as we can also see in The Path to Rome. His The Old Road is fascinating - excerpts here (first edition available in the U of I stacks!)
